Michael Wafula has dedicated his life to art and the empowerment of the community of Kayole. He founded Kijiji Art Center, a creative space that mainly focuses on helping mentor young men and women who want to create art in Kayole.
Kayole is a low-income neighborhood in Nairobi that makes headlines for organized crime and gang warfare. Wafula and his team are changing the image of Kayole through art. Wafula is respected in Kayole and beyond for his amazing art and vision for Kayole.
Just like Fela Kuti, Mike Wafula uses art to raise awareness and discuss socio-political issues facing Kenyans. From corruption, technology to cultural imperialism he does not shy away from issues that are pertinent to improving the lives of working-class Nairobians.
Art and music give voice to people who are left out of the conversation. Which is what makes people like Fela and Wafula great Africans.
Check out my interview with Mike Wafula below and all of Fela's discography.
